How to Activate FordPass Connect (Ford App, 2026)
FordPass is now called the Ford app. Here is how activating FordPass Connect works, what you need first, and what to do when it stalls or a previous owner is still linked.
How to activate FordPass Connect (quick answer)
To activate FordPass Connect, turn on Vehicle Connectivity in your car's settings, then open the Ford app, tap Connect to Vehicle, tap I've Started my Vehicle and accept the prompt on the car's screen. Allow up to two minutes for the connection, then tap Check Connection Status in the app.
FordPass is now called the Ford app, and Ford's support pages now call this process activating your vehicle's modem using the Ford app. Menu names can vary a little by model year and software, so use the steps below as a guide and follow what your screen shows.
Many older guides still describe an Add Vehicle, Activate Vehicle, Allow flow. The steps below follow Ford's current support pages.
Before you start
Ford's activation guide lists three requirements: the car needs a built-in modem, the car has to be added to the Ford app, and your phone needs a strong cellular signal.
Which Fords have a modem depends on the year, model and trim. To check yours, look in the car's Settings for a FordPass Connect, Connectivity or Connected Vehicle Features menu, or add your VIN in the Ford app and see whether a Connect to Vehicle option appears. If you are still unsure, ask Ford or your dealer.
Your car's screen also matters, because the Vehicle Connectivity setting only exists on certain systems.
- Supported: SYNC 3 with a touchscreen, SYNC 4, SYNC 4A and Ford Digital Experience.
- Not supported: SYNC 3 without a touchscreen, SYNC with MyFord Touch, SYNC with MyFord, SYNC with Voice Activated Navigation, SYNC Gen 1.1 and SYNC Gen 1.
- Where to park: an open, well-ventilated, safe area, since the car has to stay running during setup. Avoid a closed garage.
- Wi-Fi: not required, according to Ford.
Step by step in the car and the Ford app
Install the Ford app, sign in with your Ford account and add your car by its VIN if it is not already there. Then follow these steps.
- Step 1: Start the car and leave it running.
- Step 2 on SYNC 4 or 4A: go to Settings (or the Home icon) › Connectivity › Connected Vehicle Features and turn on the Vehicle Connectivity slider. On the same screen, also turn on Privacy Settings, Share Vehicle Data, Share Vehicle Location and Share Driving Data.
- Step 2 on SYNC 3: go to Settings › FordPass Connect › Connectivity Settings and turn on the Vehicle Connectivity slider. Also turn on Privacy Settings, Share Vehicle Data, Share Vehicle Location and Share Driving Data.
- Step 2 on Ford Digital Experience: tap the Vehicle icon › Settings › Network & Internet and make sure the toggle is on (blue and to the right). Then go Back › Privacy › Data sharing with Ford and turn on all toggles.
- Step 3: In the Ford app, tap Connect to Vehicle.
- Step 4: Tap I've Started my Vehicle.
- Step 5: Accept the prompt that appears on the car's screen.
- Step 6: Allow up to two minutes for the connection, then tap Check Connection Status.
- Step 7: Once connected, the remote features available for your car appear in the Ford app.
If activation stays pending
Ford says activation can stay pending if the prompt on the car's screen was missed or the car's connectivity settings are off.
If your phone is connected through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, unplug it or turn it off during activation so the prompt can appear on the car's screen. Some Ford dealers recommend this step.
If the app says connectivity settings are disabled, tap Connect to Vehicle, follow the on-screen instructions to turn connectivity on in the car, tap I've Enabled Connectivity, accept the prompt in the car and then tap Check Connection Status.
You can request activation again after 90 seconds. If the status still has not changed after three attempts, contact Ford app support from Account › Help in the app, call Ford at 1-800-392-3673, the number Ford lists for activation help, or ask your local dealer.
If the Connect to Vehicle tile never shows up on a car that has a modem, or the app shows 'Feature Unavailable for fleet vehicles', Ford says to contact app support through Account › Help.
Activation failed or a previous owner is still linked
Ford's activation guide says to try a reset if activation fails. The reset removes every Ford app account linked to the car, which includes a previous owner's app access. Park in an open, well-ventilated area and keep the car running while you do it.
The modem reset only clears app access. To remove a previous owner's personal data and in-car settings as well, Ford says to do a separate factory reset, which also erases navigation favorites and SiriusXM presets. If an old profile still will not come off, the selling dealer or Ford's support line can usually sort it out. Our guide to taking over connected services on a used car covers the rest of that process.
- SYNC 4 or 4A: Settings › General › Reset › FordPass Connect Reset › Reset All › Continue.
- SYNC 3: Settings › General › scroll down to Reset › Okay › Continue.
- Ford Digital Experience: Apps › Settings › System › Reset Options › Connectivity Reset › Erase network data.
- What it removes: every Ford app account linked to the car, including yours, so anyone else who uses the app with this car will need to connect again.
- After the reset: run the activation steps again on any system. On SYNC 4 or 4A with Connected Navigation, turn the connectivity settings back on first.
Does FordPass Connect cost anything?
Activating the modem is the first step toward Ford's Connected Services. Some cars come with a connected-services trial, so check your Ford account to see what applies to yours.
Pricing varies by service and by year, model and trim. Ford shows current prices in the Ford app.
Using your Ford with other apps
CarConnect is our app, made by Loop Mobile FZCO. It is independent and not affiliated with Ford. It connects through the same connected-services account the Ford app uses, so that account needs to be active first, and you can keep using the Ford app alongside it.
- Signing in: you sign in with your Ford account on Ford's own sign-in page. Your password stays with Ford, and the app gets back revocable access to the vehicle or vehicles you approve.
- Data sharing: make sure the data-sharing toggles are on in the car (Share Vehicle Data and Share Vehicle Location, or Privacy › Data sharing with Ford on Ford Digital Experience). If data sharing is off, location and status may not come through.
- Timing: Ford says the modem connects within up to two minutes. Even after that, a newly set up account can take up to a couple of days before other apps can read live data.
- What you can see: remote lock and unlock, live location, and fuel or charge status, depending on your car's make, model and year and its connected-services account.
- Which Fords: models that support the Ford app, with a built-in modem and one of the supported screens listed above. A free in-app compatibility check shows what your model and year supports.
Common questions
Is FordPass Connect the same thing as the Ford app? No. FordPass Connect is Ford's connected-services product: the modem built into your car plus the account that switches it on. The Ford app, formerly FordPass, is what you use on your phone to activate it and send commands to the car.
Is FordPass Connect free? It depends on your car and the service. Some cars include a trial, and Ford shows current prices for its Connected Services in the Ford app.
How do I know if my Ford has a modem? Look in the car's Settings for FordPass Connect, Connectivity or Connected Vehicle Features, or add your VIN in the Ford app and check for a Connect to Vehicle option.
Why don't I see the prompt in my car? Vehicle Connectivity may be off, your screen may not support it, or Apple CarPlay or Android Auto may be covering the screen. Start the car, check the connectivity setting, disconnect your phone and request activation again after 90 seconds.
