CarConnect is a third-party app for iPhone and Android that supports 46 car makes, roughly model year 2010 onward. Connection runs through Smartcar, the connected-car platform that carmakers use to let owners share vehicle access with apps they choose. That is why a Honda and a Volvo can sit next to each other in the same list, on the same screen, with the same buttons.

The 46 makes run from Acura, Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW and Chevrolet through Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Lexus and Mazda to Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, RAM, Rivian, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo. European badges are in the list too: Citroen, Cupra, Dacia, DS, Fiat, MG, Mini, Opel, Peugeot, Renault, Seat, Skoda and Vauxhall.

Your HondaLink or Volvo Cars account keeps working exactly as it does today, and the official app stays on your phone for anything you want to do there. Both read the same connected-services account, so both see the same car.

Your manufacturer account stays yours

When you link a car, CarConnect hands you off to the carmaker's own login page. You type your username and password there, on the manufacturer's site, and come back. CarConnect never sees or stores that password. What it receives is an access token, which is permission to read the car and send the commands you tap.

Access ends from either side, whenever you want. Remove the vehicle inside CarConnect, or open the connected-apps section of your manufacturer account and revoke it there. Either action ends the link. Nothing was installed in the car to undo: no OBD dongle, no adapter, no tracker in the glovebox, because CarConnect reads the factory telematics module your car was built with.

A household with three brands, one screen

A Ford in the driveway, a Hyundai at the curb and a Kia at a friend's house across town is three sign-ins and three sets of habits. In CarConnect it is one list. At 11pm on a Sunday you can see whether all three are locked, where each one is, and how much fuel or charge is left, without opening anything else.

The same list answers the small questions that come up during the week. Did the Kia make it to school. Does the Hyundai have enough range for the airport run in the morning. Is the truck still parked where you left it before the flight. If you have ever wanted one icon on the home screen instead of a folder full of carmaker apps, that is the shape of it.

What each car shows, and the taps that matter

CarConnect reads location, fuel level or EV charge and range, odometer, lock state, tire pressure, engine oil life, VIN and vehicle information, and service history from the carmaker. It is the car's own reported state, read from the factory telematics module the car was built with.

You send commands with a tap: lock, unlock, trunk, and start or stop charging on an EV. So when a neighbor needs to get something out of the trunk while you are at work, you tap trunk from wherever you are, and tap lock from the same screen when they are done. One tap, on whichever car in the list you are looking at.

Adding the next car, whatever badge is on it

Garages change. A lease ends, a teenager gets a first car, the pickup becomes a Rivian. Adding that car is the same short trip you made the first time: pick the make, sign in on that carmaker's own login page, come back, and the car joins the list. Whether it is your fourth Ford or your first Volvo, the steps are the same and the screen afterward is the same.

Each vehicle carries its own access token, so the cars stay independent even though they sit in one list. Link the Hyundai today and the Kia in March, and each one keeps its own permission that you can end from either side whenever you want.
